(1) Designing an Interprofessional Education Simulation for Nursing and Respiratory Therapy Students

Introduction
Simulation based Interprofessional Education (IPE) enhances patient care and safety by improving communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals. Professional collaboration in simulation is not utilized by the nursing and health programs at Madison College. The purpose of this project was to develop a simulation that brings two disciplines together for a shared IPE experience.
Theoretical Framework
Team Based Learning Theory supported the development of preparation material and team building prior to and during the simulation. The Stoneybrook Framework for Interprofessional Team Collaboration assisted with guiding the competency development for team-based learning.
Description
A simulation scenario was developed for Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and Respiratory Therapy (RT) students. Learning objectives included: identifying role responsibilities, communicating as a team, working collaboratively toward patient centered goals, and reflecting on the care delivered. The scenario was piloted with a small group of students.
Target Population
The population targeted were students in the second year of the ADN and RT program at Madison College.
Results/Outcomes
Descriptive data was collected via debrief discussion and survey. Survey questions addressed faculty/student perceptions of satisfaction related to the simulation. Survey data and debrief comments, demonstrated that faculty and students found the IPE simulation beneficial to their learning about patient care management, roles and responsibilities, communication, and collaborative care.
Conclusion
This pilot project demonstrated that the developed scenario meets the needs of the nursing and RT curriculum to enhance exposure to Interprofessional Education. Ongoing steps will be to offer this IPE simulation to all RT and nursing students.
