(57) Enhancing Spanish Proficiency and Cultural Competency in Nursing Students to Improve Patient Outcomes and Reduce Health Disparities through Simulation and Tech-Based Learning

Introduction: Effective communication and cultural competency are essential for improving patient outcomes and reducing health disparities. This presentation highlights an innovative undergraduate elective course designed to enhance Spanish-language proficiency and cultural competency among nursing students, thereby improving care for Spanish-speaking patients.

Methods: The course integrates scaffolding simulations, cultural competency concepts, and technology-based Spanish-language learning tools. These elements work together to provide students with practical language skills and a deeper understanding of culturally competent care. The scaffolding simulations offer step-by-step guidance, allowing students to build their skills progressively. Cultural competency concepts are woven throughout the curriculum to ensure students understand the importance of culturally sensitive care. Technology-based tools, such as language learning apps and virtual patient interactions, provide immersive and interactive learning experiences.

Results: Through this course, students develop the ability to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients, promoting health equity and overcoming language barriers. The innovative design of the course ensures that students are better prepared to deliver culturally competent care in diverse healthcare settings. Preliminary data from students indicates increased confidence in their language skills and a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. Data collection and analysis is currently underway, and will be presented at completion.

Conclusion: By incorporating language learning, simulation, and cultural competency into nursing education, this course equips future nurses with the skills necessary to improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities. This approach not only enhances students’ proficiency in Spanish but also their capacity to provide equitable and culturally sensitive care.
