(11) Using the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument to Evaluate Student Learning Outcomes in a Multi-patient Simulation

Abstract: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials Core Competencies for Professional Education identified leadership ability, clinical judgment, prioritization of patient care, appropriate task delegation, and effective communication and collaboration with members of the healthcare team as crucial priorities in entry-level nursing education (AACN, 2021).

Multiple-patient simulations are demonstrated to provide nursing students with opportunities to practice these skills in a safe and controlled environment (Ross et al., 2022). The purpose of this multi-patient simulation was to enhance students’ competencies in prioritizing, delegating, collaborating, communicating within healthcare teams, and managing competing priorities and tasks in a clinical setting as they prepare to transition from academic to professional practice.

The multi-patient simulation learning experience was developed using the INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™ for simulation design, including a criterion that specifically focuses on developing an evaluation plan.

The Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (C-CEI) (Todd, et al., 2024) was selected as a valid and reliable tool to measure expected student learner outcomes in four main categories: Assessment, Communication, Clinical Judgment, and Patient Safety. The CCEI was used with over two hundred pre-licensure senior nursing students, from a traditional program and a second-degree program participating in a multi-patient simulation to evaluate learner outcomes, Specifically focusing on evaluating core competencies including prioritization, delegating, collaboration and communication, and clinical judgment.

As nursing programs transition to Competency-Based education, developing a plan for evaluation of the learner will be essential. The C-CEI was found to successfully measure student learner outcomes during a multi-patient simulation.
