Patricia Poirier received her diploma in nursing from New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts in 1975. She received her PhD in Nursing Health Policy from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She has been an oncology certified nurse specializing in radiation oncology since 1984. Her research interests are symptom management in cancer as well as palliative and end of life care. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals on fatigue and functional status during cancer treatment and on nurses' and patients' perceptions of nurse caring. She is Associate Professor at the University of Maine in Orono where she has developed an interest in the use of simulation to aid in the transition of nursing students to professional practice
