Kelly Foltz-Ramos, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, CHSE-A, is the Director of Simulation and Innovation and an Assistant Professor at the University at Buffalo School of Nursing. She has been involved in simulation-based education since 2008, leveraging her background in clinical practice, corporate nurse education, and academia to advance the field.
Dr. Foltz-Ramos is passionate about utilizing simulation to enhance nursing education, particularly in rural and underserved areas. She is the principal investigator of the REACHvr project, which integrates virtual reality simulation into nursing curricula to expand access to high-quality training. She also leads research on the use of simulation to foster interprofessional teamwork and improve healthcare outcomes.
As an active member of INACSL, SSH, and CAN-Sim, Dr. Foltz-Ramos contributes to the advancement of simulation through research and collaboration. She currently serves as Chair of the INACSL Research Special Interest Group and has received multiple grants to support her work, including a CAN-Sim multi-site research grant studying the impact of poverty-focused virtual simulation on empathy in healthcare providers.
Dr. Foltz-Ramos has presented nationally and internationally on simulation, debriefing methodologies, and the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare education. She is also engaged in curriculum development, employing a range of fidelity levels in simulation-based learning and exploring AI-enhanced debriefing strategies.
Her current research focuses on using simulation to develop shared mental models among healthcare teams, aiming to improve communication, collaboration, and patient safety. Through this work, she seeks to enhance team performance by deepening the collective understanding of roles, responsibilities, and clinical decision-making in complex healthcare environments.
