Rachel Phelps is currently an Assistant Professor and Simulation Director of Nursing at High Point University. Before teaching, her areas of nursing expertise included adult cardiac care unit, adult intensive care unit, general pediatrics, adult medical surgical units, telemetry, and patient care manager with managerial responsibilities of a medical-surgical unit. Dr. Phelps was also a travel nurse in Florida and North Carolina on cardiac step-down units, progressive coronary units, and a step-down unit for patients with strokes and cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Phelps obtained her master’s degree in Nursing Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lenoir-Rhyne University. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in nursing administration with an additional educator role from Samford University. Dr. Phelps also has a Post-Master’s Certificate in Teaching in Nursing and Health Professions from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and a Certificate in Simulation from Drexel University. She is National League for Nursing Certified Academic Clinical Nurse Educator and a Society for Simulation in Healthcare Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator.
Since graduating from Samford in 2021, Dr. Phelps’s research and professional development achievements reflect her clinical experiences and include her DNP project entitled, "Keeping Heart Failure Patients in the 'Loop’. She has also published with StatPearls Publishing and Journal of Christian Nursing. Before this presentation, her most recent presentation was in FL in 2023 entitled "Translating research evidence into practice: Your DNP can bridge the gap!".
A fun fact, since 2010, she has been actively involved with Nurses Christian Fellowship and has served as a volunteer nurse campus minister since 2014 and in addition now serves as a regional coordinator.
