Dr. LaToya Lewis is a distinguished nurse educator, critical care nurse leader, and simulation researcher whose career spanned more than 20 years. She is widely recognized for developing simulation-based education programs that address end-of-life (EOL) and palliative care disparities, focusing on culture, religion, and African Diaspora communities.
Her research centers on how culturally and religious informed simulation can enhance healthcare providers' communication, confidence, and caregiving skills, improving support for patients and families during critical health transitions. Notably, Dr. Lewis collaborated with the Busoga Kingdom in Jinja, Uganda, where she led initiatives to strengthen palliative care services, contributing to more culturally relevant EOL care practices in the region. This global partnership deeply informs her educational approach and enhances her ability to prepare nursing students for diverse, real-world challenges.
Dr. Lewis has authored several peer-reviewed publications and disseminated her scholarship through national and international presentations on nursing education, simulation, and culture. Her work bridges practice and pedagogy, advancing evidence-based and culturally responsive nursing knowledge.
As an educator, Dr. Lewis partners with academic institutions and healthcare organizations to integrate cultural humility and health equity into nursing curricula. She is a proud member of Sigma Theta Tau. She serves as an editor for the ABNFF Journal (ABNFFJ), promoting scholarship that amplifies underrepresented nursing voices and addresses health disparities.
In addition to her academic leadership, Dr. Lewis is a health panel expert on South Florida PBS, where she shares her insights on pressing public health issues, especially those affecting underserved populations.
