PC13 - From Prebrief to Debrief: Using AI to Elevate Simulation Standards

Abstract: Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative tool in nursing education simulation, offering significant potential to elevate the simulation experience in alignment with the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™ (HSSOBP), particularly the Core Four standards: prebriefing, facilitation, debriefing, and professional integrity. This interactive workshop aims to prepare participants to effectively integrate AI to enhance the processes of designing simulation-based learning activities.

Participants will explore using AI to support the development of structured prebriefing prompts, facilitation cues, and debriefing guides aligned with the Core Four standards. Considering AI’s role as an adjunct tool, the session will highlight how AI-generated content can augment scenario design. Guided by experiential learning theories, attendees will practice creating and refining AI prompts that generate content to enhance simulation design and fidelity while upholding professional integrity.

By critically evaluating AI-generated outputs, participants will ensure alignment with the educational objectives of simulation-based learning activities. Discussions will include strategies for integrating AI effectively while maintaining simulation authenticity, inclusivity, and clinical and contextual accuracy, thus elevating the overall simulation experience.
After this workshop, participants will be prepared to leverage AI as a supportive tool in the design of standards-aligned simulation-based learning activities. Focusing on the Core Four standards, participants will gain skills to use AI innovatively and purposefully, preserving the necessity of human expertise and judgment regarding clinical fidelity to design simulation experiences.
