S18 - Creating a Robust Pediatric Clinical Experience with Limited Access to Hospital Placements

Abstract : Educators often struggle to provide thorough and challenging pediatric clinical experiences for learners due to lack of clinical placements or experienced clinical instructors (Sanders, Barr, & Goldstein, 2020). In addition, Leighton et al. (2021), discovered that there was no evidence to suggest that traditional clinical models are meeting our students’ learning needs. In response, we use multiple simulation modalities (mannequin, immersive virtual reality, serious games) alongside community experiences to support our student’s ability to meet learning objectives. Through thoughtful application of INACSL Standards of Best PracticeSM while using NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory (Jeffries, 2021), we believe it is possible to provide every nursing student with a robust pediatric clinical experience while advancing their critical thinking, problem solving, and higher ordered thinking skills. In this workshop, we will share the development of our pediatric clinical experience over the last four years including how each of our simulation modalities have evolved to ensure that learners are challenged and able to meet clinical learning objectives such as developing clinical judgements, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills. Practical lessons learned and successes will be highlighted. We will also share how we integrate each of these modalities to target specific learner needs. Participants will engage in brainstorming and idea sharing activities as we work together to use available resources and knowledge to create teaching strategies with the goal of developing a robust and engaging pediatric clinical experience.
