S14 - AIM for Innovation: Leveraging Multiple AI Tools to Enhance Nursing Simulations

Abstract : Introduction

The 21st-century nursing student is a digital native with high expectations for educational experiences. Until recently, access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools has been cost-prohibitive or intimidating to new users. The latest AI tools provide simulation educators with free or low-cost solutions to provide learners with stimulating pre-simulation preparation materials, creative scenarios, and even helpful tools for the solo facilitator during scenario delivery. This hands-on presentation will demonstrate various tools and potential use cases for enriching simulations via AI technologies.

Framework

This project is guided by the Diffusion of Innovation framework. AI tool use will be shared within the simulation community to enhance simulation-based experiences, which promotes acceptance by other levels of adopters.

Description

Faculty used an iterative approach with an AI authoring tool to create backstories, objectives, and outlines for simulations. A different AI tool generated an audio podcast that replaced a traditional pre-reading assignment. The faculty also made handoff reports with an AI video creator as prebriefing elements.

Population

This project applies to simulation creators wanting innovative ways to enhance the user experience.

Results

Students and faculty provided anecdotal feedback. Many students stated they enjoyed the pre-simulation podcast. Students understood their patients’ needs from viewing the video handoffs, and they appreciated the complexity of the multi-patient prioritization scenario designed using AI.

Discussion

AI tools may enrich simulation design. AI-generated video standardizes message delivery and may decrease role confusion as compared to faculty portrayals. Enjoyment of pre-simulation assignments may lead to higher levels of completion and preparation.
