S30 - Saving Time with AI: Best Practices for using Generative AI to Create Simulation Materials

Abstract : This workshop provides a structured exploration of generative AI (genAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs), including ChatGPT, within medical simulation design. Participants interested in exploring these methods will receive both didactic and hands-on practice for deploying strategies to align AI output with educational goals. Underpinning this workshop is an alignment-driven framework integrated with simulation design standards to mitigate the risk of misinformation, hallucination, bias, or other negative outcomes. The workshop begins with an introduction to LLMs and the current landscape of genAI technologies, discussing the opportunities they offer alongside potential drawbacks. Participants will be introduced to prompt engineering techniques and methods for iterating on AI-generated content to achieve reliable and educationally relevant outputs. This alignment-based approach is designed to help educators ensure AI outputs meet intended goals while minimizing risks associated with genAI use in medical training. In hands-on group activities, participants will work collaboratively to design a simulation scenario using an LLM, with faculty offering guidance and feedback on prompt development and refinement techniques.
