Abstract : Title: Multi-Patient Adventure Simulation for Interprofessional Competencies in BSN and DNP Students

Learning Objectives:

3) Identify simulation opportunities for achieving interprofessional competencies

Background: Interprofessional education enhances team communication and patient outcomes. Simulation-based education helps health professional students achieve interprofessional competencies. In the effort to foster interprofessional competencies, our nursing program engaged DNP and BSN students in a multi-patient simulation.

Methods: Combining deliberate practice and experiential learning theories with Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSBP) as a framework, a multi-patient “Adventure Simulation” was developed for final semester BSN students. Students in their capstone experience are assigned care for up to three patients on a simulated hospital unit where nursing faculty/staff play the roles of the interdisciplinary team. Second year DNP students were incorporated into this simulation as the healthcare provider. Desired outcomes for both student groups (safe patient care, effective decision-making, and strong communication skills) were addressed in a structured debriefing, utilizing HSSBP.

Results: Each semester, up to 64 BSN and 8 DNP students participate in the simulation. Feedback from debriefing and post-surveys suggest this collaboration fosters improved interprofessional competencies.

Conclusion: By engaging in Adventure Simulation, BSN students work in partnership with DNP students to demonstrate safe care, effective decision making, and strong communication skills, fostering essential interprofessional competencies and improving patient outcomes. With the potential to involve various health disciplines, future work will focus on creating assessment tools to evaluate competency development.
