Transforming the Student Observation Role: Designing and Implementing a Focused Observation Form for Enhanced Learning

Abstract : Simulation-based learning is vital in nursing education, providing a safe, standardized environment for students to build clinical skills and decision-making abilities. Studies show that observers in simulations can achieve learning outcomes equal to active participants. Yet often structured tools which enhance student learning by providing focused engagement, are lacking.
The current observation form utilized in a nursing simulation center for over 500 undergraduate nursing students was complex and difficult to follow. This deterred students from using the form, decreasing their effective participation in debrief and overall learning. The purpose of this project was to develop a user-friendly observation tool to direct and enhance observers’ learning experiences and outcomes.
An extensive literature search was performed which resulted in a body of evidence highlighting the benefits of directed observation tools; however, no specific examples of tools were found. Therefore, an observation tool was developed by faculty and launched in a second-degree, medical-surgical simulation course. The project was guided by Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, which emphasizes learning through observation and modeling with key elements of attention, retention, and motivation. The tool directs observers to focus on essential competencies and is broken down into technical skills, such as physical assessment and medication administration, and non-technical skills, like clinical decision-making and communication.
End of the semester student survey feedback on the form reported a deeper understanding of clinical processes. Faculty reported stronger contributions from observers and richer debriefing sessions. This observation tool can be easily adapted and utilized across the curriculum in simulation-based nursing education.
