Abstract : Aim: The aim of this presentation is to understand the concept of active learning and its potential use in nursing academia. Background: The demands for innovative teaching-learning strategies in higher education increased in the past decade to foster higher level of thinking. The nurse educator must prepare students entering the nursing profession, which mandates safe patient care, using a pedagogical learning process such as active learning. Method: The presenter will discuss how the concept analysis was implemented using the Walker and Avant’s method for concept analysis. OUTCOMES: The attributes of the active learning are learner-centered; dynamic, meaningful, and engaging learning environment; bidirectional collaborative interaction between educator and learner; and ongoing constructive and nonjudgmental feedback. The identified antecedents include the educator’s active learning expertise and the learner’s capacity for higher order thinking. Conclusion: Nurse educators have the responsibility to provide the most effective learning environment based on a sound pedagogical approach. Active learning’s desirable outcomes such as the learner’s increased professionalism, critical thinking, lifelong learning, academic performance and trusting relationships; and the educator’s heightened confidence, efficiency, and trustworthiness call for educator support as they become experts in its implementation.
Please include a short summary of your presentation that highlights why an attendee would want to participate in your session.: The demand for innovative teaching-learning strategies in higher education to foster a higher level of thinking and improve social engagement has increased in the early 21st century, alongside the Institute of Medicine mandate for patient safety in the healthcare environment. This concept analysis can guide nursing institutions toward curriculum and continuing education development to build a nursing workforce that provides safe and high-quality care.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the concept of active learning, its antecedents, attributes, and outcomes and how active learning is relevant to maximize student learning.
Explain the relevance of the nurse educator active learning expertise in guiding the learner towards maximum holistic development (e.g., cognitive, behavioral, professional).
Analyze different active learning strategies within the learner’s potential learning development level and understand their implications in nursing academia, both in the clinical and curricular setting.
