F8 - A Systematic Approach For Simulation Scenario Development

Abstract :

Introduction: Simulation-based experiences (SBE) have been a fundamental teaching modality in nursing for the past two decades, and the use of simulation continues to grow. The Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP) have well-defined the definition and expectations of the simulation educator. Even though a wealth of information and training is available, nursing faculty new to simulation often struggle with understanding and implementing the existing best practice standards. (Herlihy, 2022) Current training focuses more on defining and describing the best practices found in the standards and less on the application of these practices. This presentation focuses on the application of HSSOPB, providing a step-by-step roadmap for a new simulationist to use when developing a simulation-based experience.
Conceptual Framework: Experiential Learning.

Description: Attendees will be provided with a simulation development workbook based on HSSOBP. The presentation will move step by step through the development of a scenario, describing each step in the process.

Target: Novice simulationists are the primary focus, but more advanced simulationists may enjoy having a step-by-step guide to simulation development.

Outcome: Attendees will leave with a step-by-step guide to simulation development.

Conclusions: This course is not an in-depth overview of HSSOBP. Attendees can use the information presented in this course as a starting point for self-evaluation. Knowledge gaps identified when using the template indicate further education needed in simulation design.
