PC11 - Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP™) Workshop #2 – Advanced

Abstract: Given that simulation-based education is founded on experiential learning theories, its main purpose is to immerse and engage participants in the learning process. However, the simulated interactive environment may contribute to reduced psychological safety and thus negatively impact the achievement of learning outcomes. When designing a simulation-based learning experience educators and practitioners have an obligation to produce a safe learning environment to enable the best learning outcomes. The Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP™) foundational documents are designed to promote the science of simulation-based education, disseminate evidenced-best practices, and advance a comprehensive program of simulation-based learning. An endorsed, high-quality simulation program is dependent upon the consistent application and integration of the HSSOBP™, particularly the four specific standards that demonstrate excellence in the program: Prebriefing: Preparation and Briefing, Facilitation, The Debriefing Process, and Professional Integrity. While implementation of the four specific standards may remain challenging for the some advanced simulationists, the advanced simulationists are challenged to deepen simulation knowledge to generate new practices specific to simulation. The goal of this workshop is to deepen advanced simulationists’ knowledge and integration of the four specific Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best PracticeTM to develop new insights and strategies in simulation education. Advanced attendees will evaluate their current simulation practices, translate knowledge and concepts into new strategies, and approaches to advance simulation-based innovations and promote change through leadership.

Participants will be able to identify at least one improvement strategy because of implementation of the HSSOBP ™ Prebriefing: Preparation and Briefing, Facilitation, The Debriefing Process, and Professional Integrity into their simulation program.
