(73) Simulation for Inclusion: Enhancing Nursing Knowledge and Skills in LGBTQ+ Patient Care

Abstract : Of the 17 million U.S. cancer survivors, 62,530 identify as transgender. LGBTQI+ individuals face unique barriers to healthcare access, impacting both preventive and essential care. Limited research and inadequate curriculum guidance on LGBTQI+ care leave nurses feeling unprepared to support this population effectively. This educational gap has led to a workforce lacking confidence in LGBTQI+ care. To address this, this quality improvement project aims to educate nurse champions on respectful communication when caring for transgender cancer patients, fostering a more competent and inclusive approach to healthcare.

The project includes Safe Zone training—a national program promoting a safe, affirming environment for LGBTQI+ individuals, with a curriculum specific to LGBTQI+ cancer care—and simulation training focused on respectful communication strategies. The simulation includes scenarios between nurses and standardized patients to enhance these skills.

Participants completed pre- and post-surveys to assess comfort levels with LGBTQI+ care prior to the simulations. Initially, 33% were uncomfortable to neutral about introducing themselves with pronouns; after the intervention, 93% reported comfort. Comfort with LGBTQI+ resources rose from 20% neutral and 60% uncomfortable to 100% comfortable post-intervention. Comfort with LGBTQI+ terminology increased from 53% uncomfortable to 100% comfortable, and discomfort with asking for pronouns dropped from 46% to zero, with all participants reporting comfort post-intervention.

This project highlights the role of education in enhancing nurse competency and confidence in managing LGBTQI+, aiming to improve communication and support for LGBTQI+ cancer patients.
