(58) Classroom Simulation-Based Training for Postpartum Hemorrhage Management: Enhancing Clinical Skills and Preparedness within Nursing Students

Abstract: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, requiring prompt and effective management by healthcare professionals. Despite the risks and its prevalence, students may not have an opportunity to observe/participate in PPH management through their undergraduate clinical experiences. Simulation-based training within the classroom offers a safe and controlled, immersive environment that replicates realistic clinical scenarios, providing students with the opportunity to develop essential clinical skills, critical thinking, and decision-making within any aspect of healthcare. This project aims to integrate in-class simulations into nursing curricula to enhance student preparedness, clinical competence, and confidence in addressing obstetric or other healthcare emergencies. In a collaborative effort between didactic faculty, simulation faculty, and a simulation operations specialist (SOS), a 45-minute PPH emergency experience was brought to the classroom. This allowed a large audience (over 90 students) to visualize the complication’s progression, recognize abnormal signs, implement PPH management interventions, and foresee the associated impact of those interventions. Students worked through a PPH scenario reflected through a high-fidelity birthing simulator experiencing active bleeding, vital sign changes, and uterine atony. Student volunteers performed the various team roles, which included recording the scenario’s progression, assessing and massaging the fundus, and medication administration. This scenario aims to evaluate the impact of in-class simulation-based training on clinical performance, teamwork, confidence, and decision-making abilities of nursing students during a PPH scenario. Incorporating simulation strategies into the classroom can bridge the gap between theory and practice with the ultimate hope of improving patient healthcare outcomes.
